Typing categories

This article describes how to depict client and product structures by typing.

Introduction

Types can be used to classify categories as clients, product categories or products.

Example:

  • Client A (type: client)

    • Toys (type: product category)

      • Wooden toys (type: product category)

        • Wooden swings (type: product category)

          • “Peter” swing (type: product)

            • 2016 (untyped)

            • 2017 (untyped)

Typing is used

  • when communicating with campaign participants (publisher, Ad Ops, etc.)

  • in reporting tools like Tableau

  • to control user access to different clients or campaigns (e.g. by using subcategories)

Rules for typing

Clients and products should always be properly typed in the category path to ensure effective communication in booking emails, status emails, etc.

The application also ensures compliance with the following typing rules:

  • Typing is not required for each category. Typing is not required, for example, if you create one category per calendar year.

  • Only one category within a category path can be typed as client.

  • Multiple categories within a category path can be typed as product category.

  • Only one category within a category path can be typed as product.

  • A category can only be typed as product category if it has a parent category typed as client.

  • A category can only be typed as product if it has a parent category typed as client.

  • A category that is typed as product cannot have any subcategories typed as product category.

Instructions

  1. Navigate to the relevant category in the category tree

  2. Click on the gear icon to open the category’s details page.

  3. Click the “Master data” tab.

  4. Choose the type of your choice from the “Type” dropdown menu.

  5. Click “Save category”.

Important information

Some types may not be available in the dropdown menu due to the above rules for typing categories. Contact Mercury Media Support if you need assistance.
