This article explains how customer and product structures can be represented by assigning types to categories.
Introduction
Using the type, a category can be classified as a customer, product category, or product.
For example:
Customer A (Type: Customer)
Wooden Toys (Type: Product Category)
Play Equipment (Type: Product Category)
Swing “Peter” (Type: Product)
2025 (not typed)
2026 (not typed)
Typing is used
for communication with campaign participants (publishers, Ad Operations, etc.)
in the Reporting Center
to control user access to different customers or campaigns (e.g. via subcategories)
Typing Rules
In general, at least the customer and the product should always be properly typed within the category path to ensure clear communication in booking emails, status emails, and similar messages.
The following rules apply to category typing and are enforced by the application:
Not every category requires a type. Categories created per calendar year, for example, do not need to be typed.
Within a single category path, there can only be one category typed as Customer.
Within a category path, multiple categories may be typed as Product Category.
Within a category path, there can only be one category typed as Product.
A category can only be typed as Product Category if there is a parent category typed as Customer.
A category can only be typed as Product if there is a parent category typed as Customer.
No Product Category may exist below a category typed as Product.
Instructions
Navigate to the desired category in the category tree and click the gear icon to open the category detail page.
On the “Master Data” tab, select the desired type from the “Type” dropdown.
Click Save Category. Mercury will display a confirmation message in the bottom-right corner.
Important Note
If not all types are available in the dropdown, this is due to the typing rules described above. If in doubt, please contact MMT Support.
